Compensation & Career Survey 2009

THE COUNSEL NETWORK® AND CCCA FIRST ANNUAL IN-HOUSE COUNSEL COMPENSATION & CAREER SURVEY 2009

The Counsel Network® is pleased to announce its first annual in-house counsel compensation & career survey in partnership with the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association.

Building a case for competitive compensation is challenging at the best of times and while compensation for law firms is readily available, the same information for in-house counsel is less commonplace.  The survey was conducted by Ipsos Reid and is widely considered the reference standard for corporate counsel compensation in Canada.

The results are fascinating and include the following findings:

  • Significant regional and industry differences were identified;
  • Base salaries for female in-house counsel are 19% lower than for that of their male counterparts;
  • 57% of in-house counsel are satisfied with their base salary;
  • 25% of in-house counsel reported a salary increase of >5% in the past fiscal year compared to the current fiscal year, in which <10% reported an increase of 5% or more.
